Writing a Short Story

Short stories are powerful literary devices. They are shorter than typical novels, but they still contain a plot, main character, and a theme. Their short length helps the reader stay engaged and prevents any unecessary fluff.

The following are the elements of a short story:

  1. Setting: the time, place, and surroundings
  2. Exposition: what already existed before the conflict began
  3. Rising Action: events that start the conflict
  4. Continuing Action: events leading from the rising action to the climax
  5. Climax: the high point of the story
  6. Falling Action: the story events following the climax
  7. Resolution: explanation and ending of events

To begin writing a short story, you should create an ouline that goes over these elements. Include details about the characters and the message the story is meant to deliver.

Finally, start writing! Don't worry so much about perfection; instead, get your ideas organized into a first draft. Over time, you'll be able to edit your draft and complete your short story.
